This article provides a historical and critical overview of Sino-Japanese studies in Hong Kong from the early postwar era to the present. By dividing its history into three periods, it aims to demonstrate the role of Hong Kong in Sino-Japanese studies as a bridge for Japanese, Chinese and Western academic traditions. Equipped with language skills and global perspectives, Hong Kong scholars can research issues in Sino-Japanese studies in a different manner from their Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts. This article also looks into a number of pressing issues that have undermined the further development of the field.
