Michi forwarded me this blog entry, which talks about a leaflet recenty released by the Ministry of National Defense (MND), which says that Taiwan could save enough money to buy the arms if everyone drank one less cup of Taiwan's popular pearl or bubble tea over the next 15 years. The BBC and The China Post (pro-Blue) reported it in the news of a big anti-arms rally. The Taipei Times (pro-Green) does not refer to the "bubble tea" phrase, but quotes a little less cynical argument of the rally, "the money to be used for the P3-missile could be used to feed primary students a free lunch for next 10 years."
It is funny to see how often "bubble tea" pops up in Taiwan's politics. In March, when I went to see the KMT's political rally for the presidential election, I also heard that "Taiwan's bubble tea is much more delicious than Starbucks coffee!" (in the context of 'Taiwan Jia-you').
