My Theory of Macintosh user rate

When you sit in a cafe, a library, a student lounge, or wherever with wireless internet, the possibility of seeing people using Macintosh computers is much higher than its actual market share. During my trip around NY/Boston this time, the rate seemed to hit 95%. Even in Taiwan, it looks like more than 40% are Apple computers. (It's 99.9999% in movies.) The gap between these high rates and the actual market share of 4% partly comes from the great number of desktop Windows computers used in offices and schools. My theory, however, is that it is also because only Mac users bring their computers out of their apartments. Or! people who want to carry their computers with themselves buy Apple computers

Hey Sayaka, we have talked about this before. I think the "style" factor definitely has some part to play. Another part is that a lot of macs come shipped with wireless and it is fairly easy to configure. Also the percentage among students is still much higher than 4% (fortunately). The observation you make though definitely also holds for Harvard's Widener library reading room, I would say at least 70% of the laptops are Macs there, though less in some of the other places I have seen on campus.
