As I mentioned in the last entry, the blue camp (KMT and PFP) won the majority. Since most of the pre-election polls showed the green (DPP and TSU) would gain the majority, the KMT camp has been very happy as if they had gained a lot of new seats. In fact, the green-blue ratio has not changed. Still, it is amazing that some big political figures of DPP like 沈富雄 lost their current posts. Chen Shui-bian resigned from the DPP Chairman, but stays in power as the ROC President.
Why did the blue win? Joseph summarizes some major reasons at Following Formosa. Here I would like to write down what I hear, feel and think about while chatting with my Taiwanese friends and working in the office...
First of all, as for the relatively low voting rate; It was 59.16%, the lowest in the short democratic history of Taiwan. A low voting rate is a typical phenomenon of "people getting used to, and losing interest and hope in democracy" in a sense. I hope this lowering voting rate in Taiwan reflects that people are no longer interested in populist politics. If so, the DPP completely misled their election campaign. One of the major reasons that the DPP lost is that the DPP played too much identity politics. Chen Shui-bian announced a plan that would provoke China every day, such as to use "Taiwan" for foreign (de facto) embassies, to write a new constitution instead of revising the current one, changing the national flags etc, some of which are contradictory to what he said in the 5.20 inauguration speech. Even for foreigners, who usually tend to support the green, became nervous about the direction to which the DPP was going to.
One of my pro-Green friends has also been complaining about Chen Shui-bian. He complained that the DPP did not act like a ruling party. The DPP should have discussed more practical policies, instead of focusing on attacking the KMT. I remember a TV reporter who came to our office to interview my boss about the election results also complained that the DPP had been rude and arrogant to reporters. The DPP has already become a big party, already attained power and a solid base which lets the party survive major elections (though it was unsatisfactory this time). However, it seems they have not learned what it means to be a big party and what people expect from them.
Although I know the DPP did not understand well what their voters want, rather than the KMT did well, I am still unsure what they misread regarding voters' expectations. I myself am the most worried about the nationalism card, but were Taiwanese worried about the rising nationalism, or other domestic (like economic/welfare) policies, foreign pressure from the US and China, or.... what?

I gree with you
but I think this dissapointment will be benefitial to DPP if they can adjust themselves
again just as they used to be when they met setback
for KMT's side
I think this sucess will be dangerous to their future or maybe just delay their dying
since they still have no motives for reform
and among the 6th newly elected legislators in
pan blue's side
I can't find any new blood who is able to injecting energy into thoses old politicains

あと、台湾の留学情報、ありがとう。本当に、行きたくてしようがない状態です。ただ、僕、ゴキブリが大苦手で、日本のあれの大きさと賢さで十分驚いてますけど、台湾のはそれを凌ぐんですか。若干、引きますね。。
