Busy

Busy. I've been very very busy. The organization I am working for is having a big Celebration called "World Freedom Day" on January 23. 51 years ago of that day, Chinese people living in Korea escaped from the Korea War and were sent to Taiwan under the arrangement of Chiang Kai Shek and the UN. I never heard of the World Freedom Day until I started to work in the office a couple of months ago. However, whenever my Taiwanese friends ask me "What is that organization about?" and I answer "Well, we will be having an event called "World Freedom Day"... ," their immediate response is "Oh, the one on January 23rd." WHY DO THEY KNOW THAT? It seems that event is pretty famous in this country...

The vice president of the Swiss Chapter of the organization is now studying Chinese at Taiwan Normal University, and comes to the office to help us. He and I went for dinner recently (my ICLP friend Ben joined us), and I talked with him personally for the first time. As you can tell from the fact that he voluntarily joined the organization out of his personal interests, he does not like Communism, and is pro-Conservatism. He asked me a question that nobody in the office asked me before. "Are you right or left?" It is taboo to say "left" in front of anybody in the office, but since he is a foreigner, I told him "I am sort of left... well... maybe close to the extreme left." He kept asking me a couple of very political questions, and I answered quite honestly. I could tell that he had no idea then why I was working in that particular organization. I do not know either. But it is fun.
