what in the world is better because of me?

The most impressive line in the movie "About Schmidt."
On the way home, he said to himself, "I know we're all pretty small in the big scheme of things. And I suppose the most you can hope is to make some kind of difference. But what kind of difference have I made?"

What difference has my life made to anyone? None that I can think of. At least so far. But I am not retired and still YOUNG.

No trace of SARS, No political stuff

Just came back from HK. Walking along the Tsimshatsui street on the 24th, shopping in the Pacific Place on the Christmas, from the crowd and their faces, I tried to find something that might have changed since the SARS attack and the big demonstration, only to fail.

But one thing, the People's Liberation Army seems to have finally had its own building on the main street of Central area. The building has kind of bizarre looks by which none can imagine what it is used for, except for barbed wire fence around it.

Off to Hongkong!

Today, I finally finished the last presentation of this year. And now, I feel the dire need to have some break..Fortunately, my brother can seem to find some time to hang around with me(and some money for the ticket, too~~). This time, I'm gonna be staying for a week in which I hope to catch what is changing in Hongkong.

why am I blogging?

Suddenly, it dawned on me that I've never thought about why I am blogging, since I started it in September. Some bloggers claim, most notably Ito Joi, that blogging is a NOBLE work of bringing something human into the cyber world. Well...I don't know if it really is. Maybe it is simply because blogging is offering one more way of expressing myself. The same could be said to why I'm STILL studying - because I believe it is the best way to express myself, extending myself to the society.

Memories of Murder

A Korean movie that I just finished watching. Put in one word, it is a crime movie with a "Korean" feel. The movie is based on the serial murders of 10 women in a small country town in Gyeonggi province in 1986. It is worth noting when it happened; 1986 - one year before massive pro-democracy movements swept the country which eventually brought the military regime to an end.

Still vivid in my memory is the shock of the crime(even though I was then only 10 years old), but I didn't realize the incident happened in a small countrytown could be understood in the context of contemporary Korean history. The ditectives, who are so obssessed with putting their 'dishonor' to end as to force innnocent people into false confession, easily overlaps with the authoritarian government. And it seems to me that their ultimate failure to arrest the criminal -the single most important point of this movie- might mean the wreck of the national plan of military regime.

Well, whatever interpretations, I think this movie fairly deserves the incredibie success at the box office - it attracted more than 5 milion in only five major cities of Korea. The figure simply says something 80's still provokes much thinking to Koreans many of whom know, consciously or unconciously, their present affluence owe much to the darkness of the 80s and lots of people facing against the darkness.

There is another Korean movie in which how the darkness of the 80s had ruined an individual is beautifully depicted by Lee Changdong(a famours director and the incumbent minister of culture and tourism)- "A peppermint candy" which is my favorite.
